What You Need to Know When Planning Your Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets will give you more freedom to achieve your desired style. However, buying them is not easy, especially if it’s your first time. Don’t worry; we’re here to help you out.

Cabinet Door Styles and Designs

Cabinet doors come in many styles and designs. From shaker to traditional to contemporary, the choices are endless. However, if you’re not an experienced designer, it’s best to choose simple doors with a clean and straight design. The classic style kitchen cabinet doors can look stately and give your kitchen a warmer and classic touch.

Some of the door styles are:

  • Arch Doors

Cabinet doors with a raised panel in the centre and an oval shape at the top are called arch doors. They can be made from wood or glass and custom-made to contour the details of the arch. These doors add a classic, timeless feel to your space.

  • Cathedral Doors

Similar to arch doors, cathedral cabinet doors also have a raised panel. What sets it apart is its mediaeval-looking arch at the top. Some cathedral doors feature a rounded top, while others are rectangular with an arched raised panel added.

  • Shaker Doors

Shaker doors have a flat, recessed panel. They’re a versatile and popular type of cabinet door found in many homes. Shaker doors are usually made of wood and come in oak, cherry, and maple finishes. White is a popular colour for shaker doors, but they can be painted in any colour to match your home’s style.

  • Slab Doors

Slab doors are a straight, flat, slab with a centre panel and a flat, unpolished edge. They’re most popular for use in modern kitchens.

Some slab cabinet doors have a mild design and are made of glass. If you’re looking for a modern kitchen, slab doors are a great choice.

How Your Custom Cabinets Will Be Built

It will be helpful to know how your custom cabinets will be built in the decision-making process. To start, the space will be measured. Then a design will be drawn up so you can see what the cabinets will look like.

After that, the manufacturer will create a prototype so that they can be sure they are creating the cabinets that you want. Finally, the cabinets will be built.

There are two common methods of cabinet construction:

  • Thick Face Frame Construction

Thick face frame cabinets are built by glueing solid panels outside the carcass (a box-shaped frame). Then a frame is built inside the carcass that fits the frame perfectly. The frame is also glued together. The doors are made separately and then attached to the face frame with hinges.

  • Melamine Face Frame

With melamine face frame cabinets, the melamine boards are glued directly onto the face frame. When you’re buying your custom cabinets, make sure you choose this style if you want the face frame to look like wood.
